Lights, Camera, Action!

OH SNAP! It has begun.

I have lights. I repeat: I. HAVE. LIGHTS.

So the other day, Hilary gave me a belated Christmas present, some soft box lamps! So obviously we had a photoshoot, along with my roommate, Callum. There's even some shots of me for once!

More to come soon!

Test Shots with Hilary Ross

Hello everyone,

Recently my girlfriend Hilary was asked to model by a photographer. Having seen the photos, not only did she looks incredibly beautiful but I thought to myself "hey, I could totally do something like that". So after discussing with her my ideas she agreed to model for me to let me practice and I've been extremely happy with the results!

Given we're both newbies at these things, we didn't really know where to start. We used an empty wall in my apartment and some bright lamps. Using examples on Pinterest we figured out some poses for her to take and just took a bunch of photos until they looked good. Over 150 shots later there were only a few worth working with, nothing wrong on Hilary's part, just me messing around with my camera settings and light positioning which I guess is a good thing that I kept trying until it was just right. Practice makes perfect, right?

Once I had the photos loaded up on my MacBook, I started to look up Adobe Lightroom tutorials on some tips for editing. Now obviously there's a lot of things I still need to learn, but I'm super happy with how they turned out! I'm more than open to feedback if you have any!

One thing that I learned from these YouTube videos is that for this sort of thing, I should consider shooting in RAW. So for the next go, I'll most certainly try this.

Happy holidays everyone and let's hope for an exciting 2016!

Berlin - November 2015

Hello everyone, it's been a while. I know, I know, I said that the creation of this website would be the start of me motivating myself into travelling more and practicing my photography. I'll give myself a slap on the wrist because I definitely haven't had the motivation I want. I did however take a trip with some friends to Berlin, Germany last month. Here's a collection of photos that I took when I was there. Subconsciously I think I focused more on taking photos that I would consider "memories" rather than focusing on the whole art side of things. But hey, isn't that what photography is about - capturing what means most to you... I think....

During the time I was in Berlin the horrific terrorist attacks on Paris happened. Being in a major European during this time, for me, let to much discomfort. Visiting the Brandenburg Gate the following day, with it illuminated with the French tricolour, was so moving and showed the union of the people.

On a lighter note, here is a song that was constantly in my head the whole trip, I hope you enjoy.

Hopefully I'll have updates more frequently!

Meet Casper!

Hello everyone!

Would you look at that; day two and I'm making another post!

I would like to formally introduce you to the best photo subject known to man - my 6 year old Samoyed, Casper!

Something that you'll come to realise from visiting this website is that, even though the world is beautiful, I love taking pictures of my dog way too much!

Anyways, here's some photos taken this week on one of our many lazy evenings at home.

Vancouver 2015

Back in October 2014 I saw a video from YouTuber Ben Brown which showcased his time in Canada. Immediately after watching this video, I began researching vacations. Fast forward to July 2015 and I visited Vancouver, BC for the first time with my two friends Callum and Ashley. Brand new Canon 17-40mm L Series lens in hand, I decided that this was going to be where I would try my best to further my photography "skills". I've always been into the idea of photography, taking pictures whenever I can, but I've never really understood the art involved in taking that perfect shot.

Now I should give a disclaimer, the pictures included in this post which are highlights of my trip are in no way that aforementioned "perfect shot", however these are my favourite photos I took and will act as a diary of where I started.

I hope you enjoy what you see, any feedback is welcome and I thoroughly look forward to continuing with this blog.
